The parchment within the Mezuza is meticulously written by a Sofer Stam, a qualified scribe who has to make sure there are absolutely no mistakes in the written text. Then it is gently rolled up and put inside the Mezuzah case.

The Mezuzot in the home are believed to protect the household, keeping all its residents from evil. This is why many Jewish families will not sleep in a new home until they have set the Mezuzah. Similarly, Hamsa pendants are also said to keep away evil.

It is a very popular tradition to pass one's hand on the Mezuzah and then kiss the hand upon entering or exiting a door. The most common decoration of the case is the word ''Shadai'' - one of G-d's names. Often, only the first letter of this name - the letter ''Shin'' - decorated the case.
